Modern Networks are a member of the UK Cloud Alliance and are experts in all things Cloud. We build private Clouds and deliver a range of Cloud services, so we could talk Cloud for hours. However, this brief overview should explain in simpler terms what The Cloud really means and how it could revolutionise your business.
Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).
A Cloud service has three distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional hosting. It is sold on demand, typically by the minute or the hour; it is elastic – so you can have as much or as little of a service as you like at any given time and the service is fully managed by the provider. All you need is Internet access.
A Cloud can be private, public or a combination of the two. A public Cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet. A private Cloud is a proprietary network or a data centre that supplies hosted services to a limited number of people. Private Clouds are perfect for housing elements of a firm's critical infrastructure that the company would not be happy to release externally. Public Cloud, of course is still secure but it benefits by offering the higher-level economies of scale.
"IT leaders are seeking alternatives that help them keep pace with the demands of their business today while allowing them to adapt and evolve as their business grows."
– Val Berovici, cloud czar, NetApp
