Virtualisation enables a single computer to act as multiple computers by sharing the physical resources of the host computer across multiple environments. This enables multiple operating systems - which can be different - to run totally independently on a single piece of hardware. The benefits to an organisation include saving hardware costs and greatly reduced energy consumption. Another very important benefit of virtualisation is the ability to move virtual machines from one physical host to another. This allows organisations to easily implement disaster recovery plans; since virtual machines are stored as simple computer files, the time to recover a server reduces from many hours to a few seconds.
